| Body Fat Measurements |
|
|
In an effort to help you reach your fitness goals, CFC will be sending a dedicated trainer to all the OC sites specifically to measure the body fat of anyone who wants to be measured. Your instructor(s) will be scheduling with our body fat trainer, Shannon Kitlas. Shannon will be arriving at the scheduled site about 15 minutes early. Each measurement takes about 2 minutes so we will be scheduling appointments on a first come first serve basis. Please look for details from your instructors.
The device we use is a hand held device that measures impedance. Based on your height, weight and age, a body fat percentage is determined. This method has about a 3% error rate. We feel this is an accurate enough error rate and clients will not have to undress at class, in order to be 'pinched' in the proper locations as is necessary with the calipers.

Hello-
It has been a while since CFC's last newsletter, so I thought it might be time to catch up with you again. In this letter, I am going to rant a little, but please do not take anything personally; I am half-serious, half-joking.
Part of CFC's mission statement is to hold clients accountable for their fitness goals. So, my goal with the following is to try to get you to think a little and with a little nudge, encourage you to get motivated. I do, however, know that there are some very motivated people out there so again, please read with an open mind.
You may have heard that there is an unwritten definition for insanity and it goes like this: insanity is to do the same thing over and over expecting that you'll get a different result.
Sometimes I feel a little insane being a fitness professional. For example, I get asked the same questions from clients, non clients, friends and family. Every time I meet someone new and they find out what I do, they always ask one of the following:
- How do I lose the fat around my (insert body part here)?
- What is the best/fastest way to lose weight?
- Why does my (insert body part here) hurt?
- Why can't I run any faster?
- Where should I get running shoes?
- And one of my favorites...
- Why am I not seeing any results?
Despite answering these questions over and over, I find that the client(s) asking these questions, sometimes, over and over again, don't listen to the answers!
Now, my trainers and I do not mind answering the questions, even from the same person, but, isn't this somewhat insane?
We (CFC) have some great weight loss and fitness articles on the web site (BLOG), but have you read them?
We have some great 'Partners in Health' who will measure, observe and fit you into the best running shoe for the type of runner you are, and may I add, at a discounted price. All this special treatment prevents injuries and keeps your body working the way it should! Nevertheless, we still have clients who buy their shoes at DSW, Sports Authority or Target!
We have exercise equipment vendors who are willing to give discounts just because you are a member of CFC. Purchase a stability ball, a Bosu Ball or a medicine ball and increase the number of exercises your trainer can teach you. These tools will help you develop a stronger core and prevent boredom and stale routines. When was the last time you added something new to your routine?
However, the most often asked question I get on a regular basis is, "Why am I not seeing results?" Personally, I feel that this is the most undeserving question to ask a trainer. Why? Because I know my trainers and I are doing our part while you are in our class. It is highly probable that you are doing something wrong with the other 23 plus hours between classes! Most likely it has a great deal do with your nutrition/diet. This is why CFC has partnered with two of the best Registered Dietitians in Northern Virginia, both of whom are willing to give discounts off of their normal rates. Between the two of them, they are meeting with ONE (1) CFC client on a regular basis!
If you are sure it isn't your nutrition, what are the chances that you're not attending classes often enough? Or, are you working at the right intensity (click here to read the article at the MySpace BLOG) when you're not working with CFC?
Insanity? What do you think?
Exercising and getting into better shape is time consuming, inconvenient, and generally not fun and will never be easy. However, I promise you, it is one thing that you can do on a regular basis that you will never, ever regret!
Sincerely, Tom Kalka

About Alli weight loss pills?
There is a new weight loss drug approved by the FDA called Alli. This pill is designed to help keep you from gaining weight by coating the fat that you eat. This keeps you from absorbing the fat into your blood stream. The pills do not really help with the fat that you already have, but it is a way to keep your body from absorbing excess calories from fat.
Sounds great, right? It sounds like the perfect way to allow you to eat whatever you want, with no consequences.
Well, the fat that you ate IS still in your body and if your body can't absorb it, it is going to come out (what goes in, must come out). Now, before I continue, I hope that you are currently not eating lunch. If you are, please stop reading. (I warned you!)
OK, let's say you followed the directions on the bottle and decided to eat a big, fat jelly donut, or two. After digestion, your body has all this coated fat that isn't going to be absorbed and that fat is going to continue through the digestive system. Think back to your health classes in grade school to what is at the end of your digestive system. Or to be more graphic, where is that fat going to POP out? More importantly, when and where are the better questions! Too graphic? Sorry, but this is the reality of Alli. I think this picture says it all, don't you?
So, feel free to try this short cut, but I think this short cut will lead to many unannounced short cuts... to the bathroom! |
| Too good to be true |

Gimmicks, info-mercials, 'get fit quick' ads...
Seriously, how many of you have fallen victim to one of the above, and regretted it later?
Bun and Thigh Master, the AB Lounge, the Air Climber, the 'perfect push-up'... you have skin creams, gels and pills... then of course there are the diets: Atkins, South Beach and "The all liquid diet." Shall I continue?
I can see you're smiling because I know you've tried at least one of these. You've tried to take the easy way out and most likely, it failed you. Or, you saw some results in the beginning, but it didn't last. So, let me start off by saying, if it sounds too good to be true, it is.
Exercise isn't 'easy' or 'quick' and it isn't a fad that is going to go away. Anything that claims "the easiest workout you'll ever do" or "a flatter tummy in just 10 minutes a day" or anything else that sounds ridiculous, is ridiculous and just stay away from it.
Deep down, you really do know what works: hard work, dedication, commitment and doing things the right way. I am not saying that you have to be a CFC member in order to get into better shape. What I am saying is, stop wasting time, money and energy on gimmicks that can't possibly work, or be good for you.
To maintain your current fitness level, exercise at a minimum of 60 minutes 3 days/week. There are no short cuts.
To improve your fitness level, do more.
Always do a program that combines cardio as well as resistance training to build muscular strength and endurance. If you can't fit this into your lifestyle, then you need to seriously think about how you can adjust your lifestyle. I know, there are people out there who CAN'T fit exercise into their lives and I feel for you, but the majority of folks can, but choose not to.
I know more people who spend their time ensuring their jobs, cars, homes or clothes/make-up are perfect and running smoothly but, if you think about it, all of these things are replaceable. You can get fired, or wreck your car, or sell your house and move, but your body, your health and your quality of life are with you no matter what. |
